Hi Dave, thanks for commenting. Yes, I agree. About 16 years ago Maggie and I were just about to do a group ride in Vancouver. The weather forecast was for heavy rain. I was packing in my cheap rain jacket. Maggie said to me, that is not going to do it. Let’s stop by the bike shop and you can get yourself a decent jacket. Well, I had been a single dad for years by then (this was just after I met her), and I was NOT used to spending more than the bare minimum on clothes for myself. So when the jacket had a price tag of $300, I felt a bit nauseous, to be honest. Two things decided me: I had only just met Maggie a few months before, and I did not want to look cheap. Also, the sales clerk told me that if I got wet on the ride, I could return the jacket on my way home. Sold! Anyway, that was the beginning of a new era for me. I stayed dry during the ride (upper half, anyway – I was still wearing cheap rain pants). Of course, I kept the jacket, and it lasted through several rainy winters. And I have never cheaped out on rain gear again, whether for cycling or hiking. It is just not worth it.
