It’s because it uses a CMOS chip instead of a CCD chip. CMOS chips scan from top to bottom (Called Rolling Shutter) whereas CCDs take the whole image at once.

The VIO POV.HD uses a CMOS chip. Have a look at the Portugal bike ride on their website.

This is an issue in recent years in the world of video because CMOS chips are cheaper to manufacture and have less noise than CCDs they’re becoming very common. Not a problem most of the time but when the camera’s in a shaky place this effect shows up. Anyway, it might not be too much of a factor if there are other things to consider.

I recently read a blog posting where a guy was using a camera mounted on his chest. It was way smoother than mounting on a helmet or handlebars.
