Self driving cars will be better than human drivers, but will need an ethical code https://averagejoecyclist.com/self-driving-cars-better-than-human-drivers-ethical-code/ https://averagejoecyclist.com/self-driving-cars-better-than-human-drivers-ethical-code/#comments Sat, 17 Sep 2016 20:41:07 +0000 https://averagejoecyclist.com/?p=19064 Will self driving cars endanger human lives? We have grown to accept human motorists killing thousands of people every single day. After all, cars are so convenient, right? But are we going to let self driving cars kill even ONE human being? Absolutely not! We must have a code of ethics to force them to behave the way we wish WE would behave. But before we get around to making laws about ethics for robotic cars, we might want to think about passing a few laws reflecting the fundamental ethic that cyclists are human beings too, and therefore motorists are not allowed to run them down?

Give us safe bike routes so that EVERYONE can cycle https://averagejoecyclist.com/safe-bike-routes/ Mon, 28 Mar 2016 06:37:58 +0000 https://averagejoecyclist.com/?p=16932 We met these two on the Lochside Trail. Marge and Dennis ride their trikes on this AAA (all ages and abilities) trail every day.We need safe bike routes in every city, so that many more seniors can cycle in safety. All the money spent on cycling infrastructure would be more than made up by the money saved in the healthcare system if more seniors could safely exercise every day.

Is Urban Cycling an Extreme Sport? https://averagejoecyclist.com/urban-cycling-extreme-sport/ Tue, 13 Oct 2015 06:59:57 +0000 https://averagejoecyclist.com/?p=15221 By dressing as if we fear death any second, do we increase the perception that cycling is an extreme sport and risk scaring other people away from cycling? Will wearing bike helmets save our lives - or just discourage others from cycling, and so increase the numbers of people who will die from lack of exercise?

Sydney Cycling – Seriously Scary! https://averagejoecyclist.com/unsafe-sydney-cycling/ Wed, 30 Sep 2015 16:00:53 +0000 https://averagejoecyclist.com/?p=15035 Pity the poor cyclists at Darling Harbour, trying to make their way through a throng of pedestrians, without the benefit of demarcated cycling lanes!I was shocked and saddened to see the awful cycling conditions that cyclists endure in downtown Sydney. Cycle lanes end in the middle of nowhere; and there is hardly any safe, separate infrastructure. Cyclists are few and far between – and what few here are, often scoot up onto the sidewalks (presumably so that they can survive a little longer).

Safe Cycling in London https://averagejoecyclist.com/safe-cycling-london/ Fri, 23 Jan 2015 22:20:15 +0000 https://averagejoecyclist.com/?p=9178 Artist's impression of the proposed bike superhighways in LondonA while ago I wrote about the proposed new East-West and North-South Cycle Superhighways in London. The need for the cycle superhighways was highlighted again when a woman cyclist was “crushed” under a lorry at the busy Elephant and Castle circle. I hope that those new East-West and North-South Cycle Superhighways in London get built very soon, so we can stop reading about these awful accidents. We need to have safe cycling in London, just as we need to have safe cycling in all cities.

Makes me wonder if these kinds of people have ever visited a truly modern city. These dinosaurs need to make way […]
